Finding Your Niche – Meaning and Examples

Do you ever see someone and feel like they’ve become successful overnight? Like they found their niche and built a business laser-focused on this one thing. And now, they’re seen as an authority on the subject. Well, I’m here to tell you that they did NOT become successful overnight. They just did the work. Finding your niche is frightening to us all. But, seeing others’ success shows it might not be so bad after all!

Does the idea of finding your niche – meaning buckling down and focusing on only one topic for your business – scare you? Honestly, it scared me too at first. It felt so limiting. Well, I’m proof that it does help! And now that I’ve done it, I’m witnessing how much more successful my business can become by being laser-focused on one thing. Ready to find out why finding your niche and meaning is so important? Let’s get to it!

What Does It Mean?

How many times have you heard the term niche? Or finding your niche? (And no, I don’t mean up above at the beginning of this blog.) A million and one, right? Of course you have! Now, my next question. What does this mean in terms of your business?

Modern consumerism is about more than just buying holiday gifts in your pajamas. These online shopping statistics might shed some light on your visitors’ habits and surprise you.

When referring to finding your niche, you’re being advised to find your “thing.” That one precise subject, position, or activity which sets you apart from the rest of the world. Your business niche should be the one thing you can do, teach or solve better than the masses.

Finding Your Lane

Now, I’m going to do something fun – I’m going to read your mind. Ready to be blown away? Well, here goes nothing!

You’re thinking to yourself, “why should I have to limit myself to one scope of work? If I met a client who would be a good fit for my company, shouldn’t I be able to adjust my scope of work to fit their needs? I’d be losing a great client if I didn’t.”

For years, this was my mentality. Niching down was just too scary of an option for me. I tried a couple of times, yet it scared me even more, each time. Precisely just how focused could I possibly get? It felt virtually impossible to focus solely on one specific thing. If I did, I felt like I was limiting myself and my business from the heights of success.

Learning the Hard Way

I found out the hard way that the less focused your niche is, the more your business goes off track. You eventually find yourself molding your business to your clients’ needs. (And trust me, they’ll all want something different.) Though you want to make your clients happy, it’s okay to say no thank you if they don’t fit your business! Buckling down and staying true to what your company focuses on will help you succeed.

Unlike a Formula One race, where racers merge from lane to lane to get ahead, Formula Done is now locked in the right lane! After nearly two and a half years, I have finally found my niche. Now, everyone in the industry knows that I’m the go-to person for content repurposing and content activation. And, to my surprise, once I focused on finding my niche and meaning, my team grew, and my business started to take off like wildfire!

Doing Your Research

So, what can you do to hone down and find your niche? Well, there are quite a few things, honestly! But, don’t let all the different things that can help you find your niche intimidate you.

One thing that helped me was naming my passions and interests. It’s important when finding your niche to focus on something you’re passionate about. You’d hate to build your business around something you hate doing. So, focus on what you’re passionate about instead. Find that one unique topic. Then do your research!

Digital marketers know that Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is one of the most important investments to grow your business online. When done correctly, it can cost very little (besides your time) so you can use your marketing budget for things like ad spend. To many, SEO is an art form that combines content creation, branding, and promotion to bring highly qualified visitors to your website naturally via a search engine. And these statistics show exactly why SEO is so important.

Starting The Process

Start by outlining your ideal client. What pain points are you solving that will attract them to you? What business are they in? Are they already putting effort into their business, and it’s just not working, or are they just beginning and not knowing where to start? Really dial down your ideal client. While going through this process, I looked into previous clients and focused on what I had been solving for them. Of course, there were many different topics at the time, but just because you can, doesn’t mean you should. So I looked for the one common thread.

Once you find the common thread, look into the demographics. Is there a large enough client base that is ready for your services? In turn, is there a large audience that will eventually want your services after some persuading? What does the competition look like? And finally, can you see yourself in this industry – in this niche – and being happy with your business? How would you feel being seen as an authority on this subject?

Setting Yourself Apart

Finding your niche can be intimidating. But, you’ll ultimately find that once you find the right one, you’ll be setting yourself up for the ultimate success. Before you know it, you’ll be an authority in your industry.
