How Lead Generation Works: A Personal Small Business Example
AKA: The day the bubble popped…
I was sitting on a park bench on the quad, having just finished up some reading and preparing to go to work when IT hit me.
I had worked hard all my life to that point, following “the path.”
Study. Get good grades. Go to college so you can get a good job.
There I was in year 3 of college – nearing the end of “the path.”
And I realized this was it – I was going to graduate and get a job and work until I retire.
All of the sudden it was like I had one of those memory movie cut things playing in my head.
I remembered when I was a kid with aspirations and gigantic dreams about how I was going to create a legacy and impact the world and be big and amazing and all of those things. 🦸♀️
I very distinctly remember staring up at the clouds and realizing this “path” I had adopted didn’t match the dreams and aspirations I had grown up with.
And I said actually out loud:
“Huh. So that’s all there really is in life.”
And I swear at that moment, I heard a POP as the bubble of my childhood dreams burst. 😢
I went on to graduate with honors in graphic design, journalism, and theater – and quickly entered the corporate world in small business marketing, where I worked for many years.
I actually forgot about the moment my dreams died until nearly 15 years later – after I had left the corporate world and dived into entrepreneurship as a digital agency owner.
One day, I realized that becoming an entrepreneur had actually recreated my bubble. IT WAS BACK! 🥳
I reminisced on how crushed I was the day the bubble popped, and how I LOVED now owning my own business because those hopes and dreams were alive again – and attainable!
Since you’re here, I know you feel that calling as well. You have something inside you to give, to share, to contribute. And that’s what makes this whole endeavor feel exciting and worth it. 🙌
And the more I dug in and learned how to build my business and get into marketing online the more it became apparent that no business can succeed without a steady stream of leads.
