Successful Marketing Strategies to Implement in Your Business
Successful marketing strategies can be made up of several different tactics. It really just depends on what works best for you and your business. Now, I know most of us are not used to watching shows with commercials anymore, but in previous days, this was a primary way to market. They were an easy way for companies to get their product out in front of masses of people. And it didn’t matter whether it was relevant to you or not. If you were watching a show, you had to watch the commercials.
Anyway, I was roped into watching a few the other day, and let me tell you, they were TERRIBLE. Not to mention, they were mostly about prescription drugs. (Is this really what the world has come to?!) And while commercials are tactics still used by large corporations, there are other, better successful marketing strategies that deserve to be brought to light! Let’s go!
Guerrilla Marketing
Okay, I’m totally going to put myself on blast right now. For years, I hated the term guerrilla marketing. I had a this image in my head that guerrilla marketing was super aggressive direct selling and hardcore closing techniques. Turns out, I had a complete misconception of the term.
According to Google, the term guerrilla marketing is the creative use of novel, unconventional methods that boost sales or attract people to a brand or business. (Yes, I admit, I was TOTALLY wrong.) In fact, it’s a great, low cost way to market your product in unconventional ways to the masses. Social media is usually involved, which in the world we live in, when is it not?
Moving on!! So, you’re probably wondering what is so great about guerrilla marketing? It honestly has nothing to do with the term, but the ways that companies have found to use this method that’s brilliant.
The Harmon Brothers
Unless you’re a total nerd like me, you have no clue who the Harmon Brothers are. Have you ever seen the commercial for the Purple Mattress? FiberFix? How about my personal favorite… the Squatty Potty? The Harmon brothers were the masterminds behind this fun, creative advertising. (And seriously, if you haven’t seen these commercials, click the links. You’ll thank me later. Honestly, these actors deserve academy awards for getting through the content without laughing hysterically!)
Anyway, the Harmon brothers were able to take boring content that would normally put you to sleep or make you wince and turned it into something magical that not only caught your attention, but piqued your interest to see if these products actually work. (I mean come on, a unicorn pooping ice cream? Seriously?!) Now, while these weren’t exactly inexpensive marketing tactics, it was a super creative way for them to turn a situation that people don’t normally want to talk about into something not so embarrassing.
Stone Brewery
One example of a company that used this uber successful marketing strategy in a creative yet cost effective way is Stone Brewing. A few years back, there were masses of beer on the market, which is nothing to talk about because obviously the beer will be on the market regardless! However, the masses of beer all had upside down labels. And let me tell you it was completely mind boggling as to why the labels were upside down. The first thing that pops into your head is “Wow… Someone REALLY screwed up.” Right?
It was all the buzz for a while, and Stone Brewing finally came out and admitted that it was NOT a mistake. It was just a way to get noticed. A brilliant, creative marketing strategy. They used this tactic to get their audience to notice them and start talking about them. The word spread about their product. They didn’t have to spend any extra money on their marketing. It was free, organic traffic. Brilliant right? What a way to think out of the box!
Thinking Outside of the Box
Now, guerrilla marketing isn’t the only successful marketing strategy out there. Another amazing way to market is to invite your audience in for an inside look at your business.
A wonderful example of a brand that took on this successful marketing strategy is none other than my favorite, Formula 1 racing!
Formula 1 racing realized that their fan base wasn’t growing. Their fans were getting older (don’t you wish we could get younger instead?! I DO!) and the brand wasn’t appealing to the younger generations. Instead of letting it die out, they have taken on a different marketing approach in order to reach a new generation of fans. To everyone’s surprise, this marketing strategy has saved the entire industry and generated fans of all ages!
A New Strategy
When Liberty Media came in, they flipped their entire marketing strategy! Instead of catering to the races, the entire racing event was catered to the customer experience. Instead of just watching the face, fans were in the center of the race with the drivers and so much more involved. As the laps progressed, fans were able to see data streams. You’re able to see how fast the cars are going, and the G-forces that the drivers were being subjected to, when they’re breaking, and all types of other real time analytics! (Sorry, total nerd moment!) It was no longer just a race. It was the dawn of a new era.
And to top it off, have you ever seen the Netflix show Drive to Survive? Hello behind the scenes of F1 racing! It’s all of the personalities, drama, data and knowledge put into a show that’s not only grown a huge following, but has also created an entirely new income stream! Who would have thought that something so simple could recreate an entire fanbase?! It’s simple yet effective marketing strategies like these that can make you or break you!
More Successful Marketing Strategies
In this very digital, post pandemic world we live in, we’re constantly competing for people’s attention. With SO many different creative, successful marketing strategies out there, it’s time to let go of boring, uninteresting strategies and embrace the freedom of your creative side. Think out of the box and try methods that you wouldn’t have considered before. (I’m not saying you have to put out a commercial with unicorns that poop rainbow soft serve, but hey, it worked!) These are just a few of my favorite examples of creative successful marketing strategies. I’ve given a ton more examples and tactics in this episode of The Content Toolbox!
