Friday friendly reminder: there are typically more than one way to do things.
-Jenn Neal
Wait, you want me to do what?!
Back in the day when I was attending Girl Scout camp, I was accepted as a trail leader meaning I would help to take care of the horses and would lead trail rides for other girls attending.
I had gotten the job so to speak (that is, all the work, no pay…) because I had experience dealing with horses and riding.
BUT
When I arrived at camp and was gearing up for my first ride of the season – I quickly discovered that what I knew didn’t apply that much.
See – I had learned to ride with an English riding saddle. Basically your feet are up a lot higher and you move your body up and down as the horse trots and stuff. Sounds stuffy and, in truth, it kind of is. But that is how I learned.
So when it was time to saddle up I was hit with a shock. This was all western style gear.
Meaning the saddle attaches a little different, you hold the reigns a little different, and you definitely ride a LOT different.
Plant your feet, heels down – grip the horse with your legs and sit through trotting and riding.
Wait – you want me to do what?
I had never experienced this before and the first few sessions ended in a very sore butt, legs, and other… areas in between. 😉
My first ride I felt like I was going to fall off the horse. When he turned into a gallop and abandoned the reigns and held hard to the saddle horn because I was just bouncing all over. The expert guide had to come along side of me and slow us down. The horse too. 😉
Honestly, I was shaking from the fear. I was completely out of breath and my hands hurt from white knuckling the saddle horn. I felt like I had never ridden a horse before and had made a HUGE mistake.
But, I finally got it and became a fairly accomplished rider – at least for that season and in my own mind.
The point? The point is that there are typically more than one way to do things.
A point which my guest expert for this episode really brought home for me. Jaime Atkinson came on my podcast to talk about how he has a business helping others to use their podcast as a marketing tool.
And the way that he shifted my perspective on how to find and have conversations with podcast guests was a completely different way of approaching the planning of your podcasting.
In fact, I would say it takes conversational marketing to a whole different level. So – check it out I know you’ll love it!

Conversational Marketing 101: Using Podcasts as a Marketing Tool
Conversational marketing is an engaging way to market a product or service while speaking to your target audience in a proactive manner. It is an effective way to captivate potential customers and boost sales.
Using podcasts as a marketing tool ensures people are aware of your product without sounding too pushy or manipulative. When you invite different professionals as guests to your podcast session, you can essentially help showcase their product or service to your followers to help them raise brand awareness and improve profits.
How to Use Podcasts as a Marketing Tool
Podcasts allow you to tap a brand new audience who do not tend to go through long-form content. It is easy to listen to podcasts anywhere, be it your home, car, or even your workplace. Here are some tips to start using podcasts to market a product or service:
Identify Your Target Audience
The first step is to decide who you want to sell to. While it is true that quality content naturally captures an audience, it does not guarantee that they will be ideal for the brand you are catering to.
Identifying your target audience helps you understand what kind of questions get the best responses from your guests to benefit your audience. With podcasts as a marketing tool, you do not have to worry about being too specific. Your followers are likely to be interested in several kinds of products and services that you promote.
Land Your Dream Interview Guests
Think about the different professionals who can prove to be your ideal customers. The main focus of every business owner is to boost their sales.
In order to market their product or service, you first need to analyze how the sales funnel works. It is essentially a step-by-step procedure that a regular customer goes through. The stages in a sales funnel include awareness, interest, decision, and action.
Podcasting is a platform that allows you to form a solid connection with your client. Conducting their interviews can help attract their target audience in an authentic manner.
Know What to Talk About
It is crucial to interview your guests in a way that provides useful information to your audience. Your job is to open the door between a business owner and their customer base.
Make sure you do your homework regarding your guest’s field of business and the nature of their audience. Start by asking your guest for a short background about their life and career for them to warm up to the audience.
Make the conversation feel like a natural exchange and keep the discussion relatable. Having an audience empathize with your guest or feeling an emotional connection to them is what will help drive sales.
Benefits of Using Podcasts as a Marketing Tool
You can help your clients optimize their sales by promoting their product using conversational marketing. It will not only help you generate more followers but also attract more clients for you to interview. Here are the top benefits of using podcasts as a marketing tool:
Convenient for Customers
Not everyone has the time to check their social media or read blogs online. Podcasts, on the other hand, are rather convenient to listen to.
Podcasts have the advantage of being non-invasive. People can listen to them while doing other work, such as having a meal or commuting to work. Podcasts can be listened to on your smartphone, which is a portable device that people can access whenever they find convenient.
Builds Relationships
A genuine conversation between you and your client would help the audience form an emotional connection with them. Conversational marketing helps showcase a brand’s personality and build a rapport with the customer base.
Podcasts are an intimate way of getting to know about a product, as opposed to other channels such as websites or social media pages. Conversational marketing adds a human element, which can play a major role in boosting sales.
Cost-Effective
Carrying out conversational marketing using podcasts as a marketing tool helps start a business with zero overhead costs.
All you need is a smartphone, after which you can start forming useful connections to gain clients. Later on, you can purchase a laptop and microphone to enhance the quality of your recordings.
You do not need a physical office or various equipment to start podcasting. You can simply begin the venture right from the comfort of your home.
Final Thoughts
Conversational marketing using a podcast as a marketing tool not only enhances sales for your client, but also boosts your image as a reliable and trustworthy marketer. As you talk to more and more clients, keep improving your interviewing strategies as well.
Always ensure that you ask questions that help people find out how a particular product or service would benefit them or solve their problems. People are likely to tune into your podcasts more often when they know your content carries weight.
