Phone Funnels and Cookies? (Girl Scout, not digital…)
Samoas. Thin Mints.
You’re welcome. 🙂 Got you thinking about my favorite Girl Scout cookies.
When I was in Girl Scouts I was a super failure as a cookie sales person.
The other girls in my troop had parents that worked at large companies and all they had to do was send the order form with their parent and BOOM all the sales.
Me? No.
I wanted the sales I had to work for it.
Which meant at first I was a failure.
But… lemons to lemonade or something like that.
So… had to work on my door to door sales. Bottom line (see a previous email) is that I got pretty good at ringing the doorbell and putting on my best “buy my cookies” sales face.
I got good at rejection.
I got good at ignoring my fears.
What I learned is that failures are really a way of learning and moving forward.
How does that relate to this podcast episode?
Steve Werner shares literally one of the best failure stories I’ve ever heard. And… how he transitioned from that failure in live events into ultimately creating super successful phone funnels and amazing email marketing techniques.

How to Build a Successful Phone Funnel
Phone funnel is a digital marketing tactic used to engage with your potential customers. It involves establishing a personal connection with them to show how your product or service can solve their problems.
A phone funnel framework has the benefit of being simple yet effective. You do not have to spend a long time drafting a complex strategy for selling your products. All you need to do is make phone calls and remain authentic while marketing.
Here are some easy steps to build a successful phone funnel:
1. Stories
Narrate relatable stories from your personal life that you feel would be valuable for your clients. However, make sure you refrain from unnecessary rambling. Moreover, at this stage, it is best to share a personal experience without making it sound like a marketing pitch.
Initially, you can build a story bank and make notes of the different plots on flash cards. Go through them whenever you have free time in order to quickly recall them when you are on a phone call.
It is best to follow the strategy of having core stories that you stick to. You may have to tweak them from time to time according to changing situations. For instance, as consumer demands changed after COVID-19, you may switch towards selling a slightly different product, requiring you to rewire your core stories.
2. Network
An effective aspect of a phone call funnel is having real conversations with prospective customers. This would help them get to know you, which in turn would make it easier for them to trust you.
A useful tip is to share a relatable story that makes people smile. For instance, you can tell them about your children or your pets. Such stories tend to gain traction on social media because people in general care about children and animals.
When building connections, avoid bringing digital marketing tactics in between. However, you can indirectly refer to it, for example, you can say that you rushed back from the vet’s as you had to begin your podcast.
3. Information
It is vital to get to know your target audience and understand their pain points. Let them know that you can solve their problem by giving them valuable information through email.
Information can provide value to your customers even if it simply pertains to something new that you found out about. For example, you can talk about a strategy you used in a live event, or some ways in which you helped a client make money.
To flow through a phone funnel smoothly via digital marketing, include a call-to-action at the end of your posts on the web or social media. Here you can encourage the potential customers to contact you if they want to learn more.
If they respond, you can invite them to a video call to help resolve the issues they are facing. Remember that it is probably not a good idea to try selling your product without delivering anything of value in return.
4. Invitation
It is crucial to understand the pain points of your customers in order to know how your product or service can help them. People are always looking for the outcome to resolve the issues they are facing.
There is no need to worry about an online sales funnel while marketing your product. Simply set up a phone call or a video call, understand the pain points, and offer a viable solution.
To begin your digital marketing journey, share valuable information on selected channels with the intention of driving people towards a phone call. Add a call-to-action in the end by asking them if they would like to talk on the phone for more information.
If someone is interested in your content, they would probably respond to your email, contact you via messenger, or drop a comment. That is when you can engage them on a phone call and attempt to provide them with a valuable outcome.
Final Thoughts
Your digital marketing pitch for a phone funnel should always be friendly instead of pushy or manipulative. While ensuring sales is decidedly important, it is also vital to market authentically rather than blindly promoting your product.
Interact with customers to make them trust you. While you are on a phone call, do not make the mistake of focusing solely on your product or service.
Narrate experiences from your personal life and talk about things that your customers are likely to care about. This will build your brand reputation and convince your customers that what you are offering is the outcome they are looking for.
