  1. Time or Money

    Consider what you have more of right now – either time or money. DIY options are going to save money but take more time or Done For You options will save time but cost more money

  2. Goals

    What are the outcomes you are after? How quickly do you need them? Are your goals realistic? 

  3. Are You Ready

    Do you have an offer that actually sells to cold traffic? Do you know that if you simply get more traffic you’ll increase your sales by x% or are you still testing? 

  4. Costs

    How much will each option cost you in terms of money and does that fit your budget? Or, how much will you lose in opportunity costs by investing time instead? 

  5. Business Stages

    The typical business cycle starts out with more time than money. Do It Yourself options are best in the beginning. Then, you’ll start to build an in-house team and look at Done With You options that take a bit of time and money. From there, most businesses will move to a Done For You option to leverage more time while scaling. Then finally, businesses will scale enough that it makes sense to bring the whole expert team back in house. This is the most expensive option, but ends up saving more time and allowing for flexibility. Think about what stage your business is in to help determine what option works best for you right now.

Should I hire a digital marketing agency? I’m guessing that if you’re here, you’ve been asking yourself this question. If you’ve been contemplating if you should hire a digital marketing agency or keep the work in-house, you’re in the right place! When making this decision, there are many factors to consider. There’s got to be an easy way to decide, right? Well, that’s where I come in! Did you know that the average local business puts 5-10% of their revenue toward their digital marketing budget? For a larger company, this can climb to about 14%! So, when I say that it’s essential first to weigh the pros and cons of keeping your digital marketing in-house or outsourcing, I mean it’s huge! While both models can sound daunting in separate ways, let’s make them a bit simpler and talk about some pros and cons.

In-House Digital Marketing

Are you a control freak? Okay, so you don’t have to be a complete control freak, but if you’re anything like me, you like to have your projects just one click away. That is one major perk to keeping your work in-house. You have more flexibility, but you literally have the work there at your fingertips. Whether you do the work or have someone on your team do it, you’ll be able to check in on the projects, make changes at the drop of a dime and see the results of those changes in real-time.

So, while having all of your work at your fingertips SOUNDS great, digital marketing is all about implementation. Learning new skills takes time and money. So, this can be an issue if you don’t have the skills or expertise. You’ll be spending lots of time learning new skills. If you’re not going to be learning the skills yourself, you’ll need to hire someone who already has the skills or train someone on your team. Consider the cost before answering the “should I be hiring a digital marketing agency” question with a no.

Digital Marketing Agency Pros

While in-house digital marketing has its perks, so does hiring a digital marketing agency. An agency will give you access to a team of experts dedicated to doing the work for you, freeing up your time to do other important work. They will already have the expertise and processes outlined, which warrants more results.

However, don’t get ready to put a ring on it just yet! Outsourcing to an agency means you don’t have the same access to your projects as you would if you kept the work in-house. Turn around time may take longer, and you cannot make quick project changes. You’re also paying for these experts – which can be costly.

It’s time to help you determine if you should hire a digital marketing agency or keep it in-house.

First off, let’s consider time vs. money. Do you have the capacity and tools to accomplish your goals? Or is there someone on your team already trained to whom you can delegate the work? Outsourcing the work to an agency can be costly, but so can taking a course or hiring a new employee (or 3 – depending on how many hats you need to fill!). Evaluate what you (and your business) are better equipped to do. Another major factor to consider is if you already have an offer that converts. If you don’t already have an offer that you know converts cold traffic, you may not be quite ready for an agency.
