What’s In This Episode

Having a strong commitment to your brand helps people see you, to recognize your brand, and to recognize what it stands for.

There are ways to promote your brand by simply finding what represents you and consistently implementing that into your daily life. Jennifer Neal was issued a challenge on Facebook that she ended up using to the advantage of her branding.

Neal promoted her brand by posting on Facebook for one hundred days in a row with one hundred days of “purple shocker.” Neal usually wears purple, and that dedication is why people know her as the “purple one.”

Stay dedicated to your brand, both personal and business. By remaining consistent, you can create a unique connection with your audience, one of trust that helps build your marketing authority.

I know early on I decided that I could be a nail artist at home.

I went on Amazon and ordered me up a bunch of the “professional” supplies and was absolutely positive that I was going to be able to do my own nail dip powder at home.

For those of you not familiar – it involves applying various layers of a colored dipping powder to each nail and then a chemical that hardens it. From there all you have to do is smooth it out.

Simple, right?

Defining My Personal Brand

I spent HOURS trying to make it work and what was left was a lumpy mess.

But, it was the best I could do in the circumstances.

My husband asked me why I just didn’t give up and let my nails be natural.

Because – it’s worth it – I’m still doing videos and this is part of “my look.”

Which got me thinking – what is “my look” and why am I maintaining it?

So… what we have now is an episode all about branding yourself. I share personal branding examples and inspiration, tips and more in this episode.

Personal Branding Examples & Strategies

You are the face of your company. You have a personal brand and that also ties in to your company brand. Think about what it is that makes you uniquely you. For me, it’s the purple hair. I am known in a lot of circles as the “purple one” because I have  had purple hair for almost 10 years and it is definitely a commitment. Having a strong commitment to your brand helps people see you, to recognize your brand, and to recognize what it stands for.

Personal Branding Examples

About five years ago, I had somebody challenge me to post on Facebook every single day for one hundred days in a row. So, I did – one hundred days of purple. Every day, I posted a picture of myself highlighting something purple. Whether it was a purple label on a product at the grocery store, or a purple handbag, or my own purple hair, I was constantly seeking out and drawing attention to purple and associating it with me and with my brand. By the end of the 100 days of purple posts, I had developed a little fan club of people who were cheering me on and even helping me out behind the scenes by sending me ideas and pictures of things that were purple.

Consistent Messaging

There is a purple store online. Five years later,  I still have people come across it, and send me a link because they thought of me. One hundred days of consistently posting on Facebook locked in the idea that I am equated with purple. You could easily do the same thing with a shape, or a specific object or even a notable font. Anything that represents your brand. The key is consistency.

That is also why I have decided to stick with it in my hair. It’s definitely a commitment, but I think anything you’re committed to, do it well. Do a good job and be consistent. After years of being “the purple one”, I know that there are times when I may not be able to make it to the salon. So, I have professional purple hair dye at home. Just last month, I spent hours in my bathroom with rubber gloves and my purple hair dye working all the purple into my hair and washing it out on my own  because I’m committed to my personal brand.

Why Consistency Is Important

While preparing the annual art show my senior year of college, I learned the value of consistent branding. In college, I was an art major with a focus on photography and graphic design. I had decided to do a series of nudes. I thought I would get one or maybe two models, but after completing one or two pieces people started to approach me asking if they could model for the project. My dad is a woodworker, and he was kind enough to make the frames for all of my prints, so I had a lot of creative wiggle room to figure out the look that I wanted. By playing with different backgrounds, lighting, and a lot of different looks I learned how to create a brand identity.

Even though the subject matter or the medium would differ from piece to piece, I wanted my work to have a consistent look. I ended up filling up half of the gallery with 12 or 16 pieces. My artwork was the talk of the art show and I sold many pieces because it had impact and was consistently done.

Personal Branding Strategy

That is the stick-to-itiveness that I brought to branding my company. The logo for Formula Done is purple and green. Green is nice but it doesn’t really go with my skin tone. I knew that I could embrace purple though. Purple has been one of my favorite colors for a long time.

That’s why I ended up doing the one hundred days of purple. That’s why I have the purple hair.

“I was always finding and being aware of purple for my brand.”—Jennifer Neal

I wear mostly purple clothes and purple jewelry. People notice and the more consistent you are the more they identify you with that particular thing.  It’s all part of that consistency, which goes as much into your consistent messaging as the actual meat of the content. We use different stock images and fonts on our Content Cash Machine and our social media posts, but we always stick to purple for the brand’s main color. Really playing up those consistent patterns can help to elevate your authority and really build that trust factor with people, just as much as your message.
