Don’t forget to find your passion in life.

-Jenn Neal

Eww why did they use that picture – it’s got bugs all over it and it’s gross.

“That’s kind of the point, dear.”

So yeah, that was me ewing over the bugs. This was about 13 years ago and we were planning our honeymoon.

We were headed to Yellowstone where I was going to learn to fly fish. And I didn’t realize that bugs were actually good for the fishing.

Fast forward to our actual trip.

We lucked out and the salmon fly hatch happened while we were there, on a private stretch of the Yellowstone river. The fish were insane and so were the bugs – and I finally got it.

Salmon flies, for those of you that don’t know… are giant like 4 inch long extra fat dragon fly looking things – they’re loud and clumsy and the fish LOVE them.

Ahhh, fish food… (I know, takes me a while)

But, it was amazing. I didn’t have to have any technique at all really, because there were so many hungry little fish. I could literally splash a fake bug in the water and watch the fish come right up to it and bite.

This fly fishing this is so easy and fun! Why didn’t I ever do it before?

Fast forward again to present day – where to this day I haven’t caught cumulatively the number of fish that I did that one week where I first learned.

Now – does that mean I hate fishing? No.

Truth be told I typically catch more trees than fish and there’s usually a lot of swearing happening.

But – when I’m standing in the river and listening to the water and the rhythm of the fly line… seriously one of my favorite things to do now. It’s like finding a calming center for me and I crave it.

And I almost didn’t do it because of the bugs and because, honestly it all kind of scared me.

But, I was willing to try something new and found a passion.

Which (you knew it was coming…) is exactly what the guest expert from this podcast episode is all about.

Evans Putman shares his journey about how he tried something new, and it worked. He tried new ways to monetize his podcast, and boy did it ever work. 🙂

This was such a fun episode I hope you enjoy it!

How to Promote a Podcast in 2021

Want to start a podcast and wondering how podcasters earn? Then, you are at the right place, as this article is all about the ways you can monetize your podcast.

As podcasts soar in popularity, they are becoming a prime money-making option for many people. Podcasts are created both by hobbyists who want to earn a side income and by business owners who wish to widen their customer base.

The audience for podcasts has grown substantially over the past few years. As an aspiring podcaster, “how to promote a podcast?” may be ever-present question in your mind. Here are some tips that can help you draw up a marketing plan to monetize your podcast:

Entrepreneurship is one of the biggest personal growth journey that we go on.

Create a Website

A crucial aspect of your podcast monetization program is creating a website to feature your work. This can act as a base for you to sell your products or services.

You may be doubtful about creating a website as podcasting is essentially an audio-first program. However, there are many benefits in store for you if you decide to include a website as part of the marketing plan for your podcast. A website can allow you to display subscribe links, form an email newsletter, and collect and analyze data.

Sell Premium Episodes

When you gather enough regular audience who listen to your podcast, some of them are likely to be interested in purchasing premium content as well. When thinking about how to promote your podcast, producing premium content is one of the best answers.

Create some exclusive recordings that would only be available for a certain amount of money. Think about unique ways to deliver additional value to your audience by charging a few dollars per month. Some of the types of podcasts you can sell include:

  • Interviews with special guests
  • Behind-the-scenes recordings
  • Early access to episodes that would be made available for others later on
  • Ad-free videos
  • Livestream episodes
You've got to get out there and share your message.

Upload on YouTube

This strategy does not work for all podcasters, but does have the potential to be rather beneficial. You can syndicate your videos to YouTube in order to make money by the views generated.

While some episodes may not get many views, you may get lucky with others. Many podcast episodes on YouTube tend to receive audience numbering over a thousand people.

Uploading your videos on YouTube is easy, quick, and free. It offers you an additional channel to broadcast your work on.

Sell Physical Merchandise

When you have collected a substantial fan base, you can begin to sell merchandise to show off your channel. Customized items that you can put up for sale include tee-shirts, mugs, laptop stickers, and hats.

You can use the merchandise to display the podcast’s name, a catchphrase that you often use, or an inside joke between you and your audience. Merchandise can be a crucial part of your marketing plan and effectively answer the question: how to promote your podcast. It allows other people to know about your podcast, potentially increasing your subscribers.

Get Sponsored

Brands which sponsor your podcast tend to pay you money upfront, allowing you to earn even without having a particularly large audience. With sponsorships, you can decide how much you charge and the time when you require payment.

Sponsorships can be scheduled on a per-episode, monthly, quarterly or annual basis. In return for some money from the sponsor, you are typically supposed to include a few minutes of promotional audio in one or more of your episodes to advertise their brand.

Be collaborative, not competitive.

Repurpose Your Content

As you keep earning by selling unique content, you can continue to monetize your old content as well. When you think about how to promote your podcast, consider repackaging earlier content and selling it in different ways.

First, select some of your best podcasts that pertain to a specific topic. Transcribe them, edit the transcriptions, and put them together in the form of a book.

If this marketing plan to monetize your podcast proves successful, you can invest in a professional design and make it into a format compatible with Amazon. Selling books on Amazon can prove to be more fruitful than selling through your own website.

Final Thoughts

There is more than one answer to the question of how to promote your podcast. You can create premium episodes, add sponsored content to earn from advertisements, and try to repurpose your content by repackaging it in a book form.

While starting a podcast simply to earn money would not be the best advice, there is no harm in financially benefiting through a loyal audience. It is best to begin thinking about a marketing plan to monetize your podcast even before you get your first episode published.
